It's a convoluted RFC, hard to read.It boils down to this:Characters 0-254 are normal, character 255 is the IAC.  If you want to send a character 255 to the user, send two of them.If you want to want to send a command (other than will/won't/do/don't/sb/se), send (for example) char 255 + char 241 (NOP), char 255 + char 246 (Are you there), etc.There's a way to send out-of-band signals with tcp/ip; this is the 'Urgent data' flag, and this paper says you should use it as a SYNCH command, which ends with a 255+242 (Data mark).See "TELNET option specifications" for details about the options.
